Air Depot Middletown History
Established in 1940 to bolster the U.S. Army Air Corps base, later rebranded as Olmsted Air Force Base and presently Harrisburg International Airport, Air Depot Middletown has a rich history. During WWII, it operated as the vital Middletown Air Depot, functioning primarily as a supply hub and aircraft maintenance facility, complete with hangars and warehouses. This depot, a cornerstone of military logistics, boasted a workforce of 17,000 at its peak and held the distinction of being the world's largest airplane engine overhaul center. The burgeoning base prompted the development of surrounding areas like Oak Hills and Pineford to accommodate its personnel. However, the closure of Olmsted Air Force Base in 1969 marked a shift, leading to the repurposing of the site, now home to Harrisburg International Airport and the Penn State Harrisburg campus. Presently, Air Depot Middletown, formerly known as Middletown East End Warehouse, operates as a private warehousing and distribution center, continuing its legacy in a different capacity.
